Orienteering is the skill of using a map, compass, terrain, and careful observation to move from one known point to another. Electronics can make navigation easier, but strong outdoor navigation starts with understanding the landscape and knowing where you are, where you are going, and how you will recognize the way.
Navigation is not just finding north. The most important habit is staying aware of your location as you travel.
The basic navigation questions
- Where am I now? Identify your position using a trail junction, landmark, contour feature, map grid, or other known point.
- Where am I going? Identify the destination and the route you expect to use.
- What direction should I travel? Use the map, compass, terrain, or a combination of all three.
- How far is it? Use map scale, pacing, travel time, or measured distance.
- How will I know when I arrive? Choose a recognizable feature near the destination, not just a number on a compass.
A navigation system, not a single tool
A map shows the shape and features of the land. A compass provides direction. Pacing and time help estimate distance. Terrain features confirm that the map matches the ground. GPS and smartphone navigation can add precise position information, but batteries, damaged equipment, poor reception, or user error can still cause problems. Good navigators compare several clues instead of trusting only one.
Stay found
- Check the map before leaving a known point and again at major junctions or terrain changes.
- Keep track of the direction and distance traveled.
- Notice large features such as ridges, valleys, streams, roads, lakes, and power lines that can confirm location.
- Turn around occasionally and look behind you. Trails and junctions often look different on the return trip.
- If the map and ground stop matching, stop and solve the problem before continuing farther.
Practice before relying on the skill
Begin on a field, park, campground, or established orienteering course where mistakes have small consequences. Practice orienting a map, taking bearings, pacing, and locating checkpoints. Navigation improves through repetition.
